Why do pitching coaches exist? What’s the importance of them? Should you sign your son up for lessons? Is it worth the cost? All of these questions are ones that come up frequently when trying to figure out if pitching lessons are something you want to make the investment in for the young pitcher in your life. There’s no one right answer to any of these questions, but there is one answer that encompasses all of them: if you want to take your pitching game to the next level, it’s worth it.
As a kid, I was involved with pitching lessons from an early age. Three, sometimes four days a week in the gym, really helped me to not only develop my own skills as a pitcher, but learn from those around me, who happened to be some of the best in the business.
There is a lot that goes into pitching lessons besides just getting on the mound and throwing. It teaches you discipline, both physically and mentally, and teaches young pitchers how to condition themselves to take your pitching game to the next level.
Most of the pitchers I knew went on to play baseball in college, myself included. The real question you have to ask yourself when trying to decide whether the cost is worth the return is this: with the amount of money given out every year in athletic scholarships, how can you afford not to? In order to take your pitching game to the next level, a coach is almost required.
